The clients desired a dining table right in the middle of the kitchen that would permit traffic flow and cooking activities yet would also be expandable for regular weekly family get-togethers. We chose a trestle design partly for aesthetic reasons and also because work flow patterns in this busy kitchen demanded that each end of the table remain chair-less during cooking duties. The table seats six diners between the ends for normal use. Addition of two leaves permits 10 to sit comfortably for Sunday dinners. This trestle table is an original design by us in collaboration with our client. The design process begins with a general idea of the purpose of the piece, along with illustrations of interiors (in this case from magazines) that show different styles that appeal to the client. The texture is hand-planed, and the finish needed to be somewhat glossy but not look plastic. It had to withstand hard daily use and still look great. In fact, the pictures you see here were taken five months after we delivered the dining table, during which time the family has been using it many times daily, without applying any extra wax or finish during that time. It is a renewable finish, using penetrating oils, colors and waxes, so it never looks like plastic and can be repaired easily. The painted finish on the base was done with milk paint over poplar.
